Investing in the next generation of steel fabricators
Apr 2026
We’ve taken some time to reflect on the huge difference apprentices have made to S-FABS over the years – after all, it’s how many members of our team started their journey into steel fabrication.
An apprenticeship gives young people the chance to learn a whole host of bespoke skills that will carry them into future career opportunities, ultimately equipping them with the knowledge and insight they need to reach their full potential.
Like many trade industries, steel fabrication is best learned through on-the-job training. Studying provides a fantastic sounding board, but the real development begins when onsite helping to turn a client’s vision into reality, or in the office/contracts department, hearing just how imperative customer service is to success.
Being family-founded, we have a strong ethos of self-development and support embedded into our work. We learn from one another and always strive to give staff the opportunity to grow, no matter their level. So, adding apprentices into the mix is a no-brainer.
We have 36 members of staff, but in addition, we often have an apprentice or two on board. Most recently, we welcomed George as our Contracts Office Assistant. After just two weeks, he dove into a wide range of administrative work that was completely new to him and integral to what we deliver onsite. We gave him the resources and advice he needed, but he brought the drive to learn on-the-job and simply give things a go.
Likewise, we’ve had apprentice Kieran on board for just over a year now. He joined as a Trainee Fabricator and has gone from strength to strength. Just six months into the job, he passed his Welding Test, showing how quickly his capabilities and skills have developed. He’s also completed a selection of key courses, including Health & Safety, that will significantly support him in the future – whether that’s with us or another organisation.
Speaking of the experience, Kieran says:
“Meeting new people and working at a young age is good. Plus, with S-FABS being a family business, I feel really happy to continue their legacy.”
We love the new perspective apprentices bring to S-FABS, and we get so much from seeing them grow in confidence. We don’t see them as an ‘add on’ – they are instantly a core part of the S-FABS team.
We’re delighted to invest in the next generation of workers through this scheme and would encourage any other business – particularly in the construction field – to consider offering this opportunity too.
If you know someone who’s keen to get into the fabrication sector, give us a shout!
